Vacations In North Africa Require Minimal Travel Documents, Red Tape

Getting in and out of Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia, when compared to other popular but exotic travel destinations beloved by adventurous Americans, is very easy indeed. Morocco and Tunisia do not require visas, just a valid passport. Trips to Algeria do require a visa, but Algeria strongly encourages tourism and visas are easily obtained by U.S. citizens.

Let’s review what you will need for each of the three significant tourist destinations in North Africa. If you are an American citizen, you will need a valid passport and a visa for travel to Algeria. The visa can be had from the Algerian Embassy in Washington, DC. It is best to contact the embassy as soon as your travel plans firm up so that you are not rushed in obtaining this crucial document, or risk getting waylaid by the red tape that sometimes accompanies requests for travel documents even from efficient foreign embassies.

The Algerian government has launched a new initiative to support tourism from the United States as an important source of hard currency for the country, and you should find the consular officials at the Algerian Embassy in Washington, DC, helpful and expeditious in processing your application. You can easily get in touch with the Algerian Consul by telephoning or writing to the Embassy of Algeria, 2137 Wyoming Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20008. The telephone number is 1 (202) 265-2800. You may also wish to check out the embassy web page.

The U.S. Department of State encourages American travelers to Algeria to make a point of informing the American Embassy in Algiers of their presence in the country, and also to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, which you can link to at the Department of State website.

This enrollment makes it possible for the Department of State to keep you posted with new safety and security announcements about North Africa very quickly, and it will also provide a service to your friends and family, who will be able to use the program to contact you in the event of an emergency. If you prefer, you can enroll directly at the U.S. Embassy in Algiers, which is located at 5 Chemin Cheikh Bachir Ibrahimi, El-Biar 16030, Alger, Algeria. Telephone: [213] 770-08-20-00, which can also be reached after hours. Email:ACSAlgiers@state.gov

In terms of the requirements for the visa to be issued by the Algerian Embassy, keep a simple list of the requirements that must be followed to help you make sure you have all materials on hand before you start the application process: Remember to submit your passport when you apply for your visa and attach two recent passport photographs to the forms, one per form. Your passport must not expire until at least six months after the date of your planned entry into Algeria. A non-refundable visa fee of $135 is required for processing, usually made via money order and payable to the Embassy of Algeria, for U.S. citizens. Check with Algerian Embassy officials to make sure that the cost has not changed.

Tourism Visa applicants must submit an itinerary of their airline travel and at least one confirmed hotel reservation in Algeria.

To simplify this process (at a cost) you may prefer to use a passport/visa expediting service to perform these routine tasks for you. They are available in every major city and are easily located. If you choose to do it yourself, remember that applicants for visas must remember to pick up their passports at the Embassy or send a prepaid self-addressed envelope for its return to you. Do not forget the self-addressed stamped envelope!

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advise also that you check to make certain you are current on routine vaccinations before you depart the country for destinations in North Africa These vaccines include your annual flu shot, and those for measles and diphtheria and typhoid. Talk to your doctor before your trip and ask for his or her advice. Typhoid is a risk in rural parts of Algeria, especially for those who are adventurous eaters.

Travel to Morocco by U.S. citizens is somewhat simpler than travel to Algeria in that only a valid U.S. Passport is required. A visa is not needed as long as your stay in Morocco does not exceed 90 days. No vaccinations are required to enter Morocco, but the health precautions cited for Algeria above apply also for Morocco and Tunisia. A passport is required for travel to Tunisia by U.S. citizens, but a visa is not necessary for stays of up to three months.
